"Fine Print"
Wednesday 26 April 2023 7pm

FOUGARO, the Philological Union of Argolis and Kastaniotis Press invite you, on Wednesday 26 April 2023 at 7 pm at the LIBRARY, to the presentation of the novel Fine Print by Ioanna Karystiani.

Yannis Tsiodras of the Fougaro Library will give an address, the author will talk with philologist Tassos Hatzianastasiou and excerpts will be recited by theatrologist-actor Emilia Valvi. The event, coordinated by philologist-historian Nikolaos Boubaris, will conclude with a discussion with the audience, and the author will sign copies of her book.

From the back cover:

This dirty trick of forgetting the bad and remembering the good things does not work; memory claims its lawful rights—all or nothing, which means that someone must be left who remembers even the fine print. There are several things that the mind had better not bury; they are not illustrious snapshots or shit-covered memories—just intangible valuables that, luckily, the brain of Michalis Tsioulis had secured under lock and key.

I tried, he went on, to make do with my humble share of everyday reality, to be like the majority of those more normal than I, to become a bit more happy-go-lucky—but reality didn’t do much for me, I didn’t know how to be comfortable in it.

The night on its throne, the breeze touring the city and the Saronic Gulf, the stars above scintillating irregularly, doing their own thing.

Tsioulis had been lucky enough to have seen the moon in fifty variations—or even more, perhaps. Golden; silver; white and huge and horizontal like a hammock; a well-fed baby slumbering in the lap of a reddish cloud; proud and stainless, keeping the fever of the night under control… As for tonight, it’s blue-grey-yellow like your eyes, you stupid engineer, as the nurse from Thessaloniki once put it.
