REDS

December 2021 – May 2022

Drawing inspiration from the works of the FKPCOLLECTION and using the entire FOUGARO ARTCENTER as a canvas, artist Florica P. Kyriacopoulos explores the energy and dynamics of red in juxtaposition with other, often related, colours. Paintings, objects, photographs and sculptures converse with each other in indoor or outdoor spaces, creating multiple installations and a large visual environment, where colour and light are in constant interplay.

Central to the project REDS is the environment created in FOUGARO’s GALLERY, with works from the FKPCOLLECTION. Here the artist seeks to abolish conventional space and real time, and immerse us in a visual no-topia. For a few moments, we are invited to commune with works by artists such as Stephen Antonakos, George Lappas, and Ona B., and to negotiate our own feelings and reactions as we immerse ourselves in a ‘black and red hues’ mood, stirring emotions and shaking us up. Spare and dramatic lighting within a large black box is key to this experience, energizing our senses and jolting us into a state of reverie.

In the LIBRARY, works by Antoni Tàpies, Imran Qureshi and Pantelis Chandris tell their own stories in a kind of dialogue of complementarity or confrontation. Thus, the LIBRARY with the content of its collections is transformed into a sphere of experimentation around the possibilities of the Word, whether in written form or as automatic inner discourse.

Last, a walk around FOUGARO’s open spaces will serve as a binding component in rounding off the REDS experience. Here we encounter diverse elements that act as visual notes retracing the spirit of the REDS project. Plants, architectural elements, and everyday items have been immersed in shades of red, enabling us to draw our own conclusions, and return to the here and now, even if ever so slightly shaken.
