Farewell to Sonia Konstantinopolou

This is a difficult day for all of us at Fougaro, as we say farewell to our dear friend and colleague Sonia Konstantinopoulou.

Quite suddenly and prematurely, at the age of 69, Sonia is no longer with us. A graduate of Pierce College and a philologist from the University of Athens, since 2016 she was jointly in charge, with Yannis Tsiodras, of the Library’s activities. She set up Fougaro’s Reading Club and organised the Library’s literary evenings and book presentations.

She promoted the vision and the mission of Fougaro with her unique enthusiasm, considerably expanding the Library’s circle of friends and the membership of the Reading Club, which acquired an international character thanks to her.

We shall miss her free and luminous spirit, her profound cultivation, her sense of humour and her contagious laughter. She had a deep love for books, knowledge and the village of Kardiani on Tinos, where she spent many summers, always in the company of Litsa, her beloved dog. Our thoughts are with her children and grandchildren, to whom we wish to stand strong at this difficult time.

We hope that where she went so prematurely she’ll be “strolling in a walled garden and smiling”, in the words of Kazantzakis from her favourite song.
