200 Years Since the Exodus of Messolonghi (1826–2026)

Children’s Book Presentation at FOUGARO ARTCENTER
The Free Besieged of Messolonghi by Filippos Mandilaras
Saturday, April 25 | 12:00pm

In 2026, Greece commemorates 200 years since the Exodus of Messolonghi, one of the most tragic and defining events of the Greek War of Independence. The besieged defenders of the city—Greeks and Philhellenes—chose not to surrender but instead attempted a heroic escape from the city walls, which ended in widespread slaughter and devastation. This dramatic event, with its immense impact both in Greece and across Europe, stirred global emotion. Today, the Exodus stands as one of the most significant milestones of the Greek War of Independence and continues to resonate deeply.

FOUGARO ARTCENTER, recognizing the importance of this historic anniversary, is participating in the commemorative year’s events with a special children’s book presentation:

On Saturday, April 25 at 12:00pm, the Llibrary, in collaboration with the 1st Primary School of Argos, invites you to the GARDEN KIOSK venue for the presentation of the book “The Free Besieged of Messolonghi” by Filippos Mandilaras.

The beloved author will be present with students and the public, unfolding in his own distinctive way the story of one of the most emblematic moments of the Greek War of Independence. Through his unique writing style —combining historical accuracy with the liveliness of verse—children will have the opportunity to discover the heroes, the unmatched courage, and the hardships endured by the besieged people of Messolonghi.

A special feature of the event is the participation of the students of the 1st Primary School of Argos, who will dramatize an excerpt from the book, bringing historical events to life in their own creative way.

The presentation will be coordinated by Giannis Tsiodras, Head of Library & Programs, while Maria Papamichail, head of the School Library of the 1st Primary School of Argos, will speak about the importance of students engaging with History through Literature.

Filippos Mandilaras’ book “The Free Besieged of Messolonghi” (Papadopoulos Publishing, 2014) will be available for purchase on the day of the event at the GARDEN KIOSK.
