Brides: Tradition and fashion in Greece
In September, Fougaro makes a dynamic comeback with the exhibition "Brides: Tradition and fashion in Greece", jointly organised by the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation and Fougaro.
The official opening of the exhibition will take place at Fougaro The Gallery Nafplion on Saturday 6 September, on the occasion of the annual meeting of the Costume Committee of the International Council of Museums. The show, which will run through Sunday 9 November, will comprise wedding gowns from the collections of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation; coming from donations, they highlight the designs and decorations of elaborate wedding dresses of the 19th century and up to avant-garde designs of the 21st century.
The exhibition forms part of the celebration for the 40 years of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation. Part of it was presented at the Benaki Museum in a highly successful display of 65 wedding gowns by historic Greek and foreign fashion houses. The Fougaro show will include another 35 wedding dresses, shown for the first time. The accompanying photographic material comes from the Photo Archive of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation, the Archives of Benaki Museum and the numerous friends who responded to the appeal for family wedding photos.
Also hed during the exhibition is the 2014 Annual Meeting of the ICOM Costume Committee on Dress and Politics [7-10 September (Fougaro, Nafplio) & 11-13 September ("Hellenic Cosmos" Cultural Centre, Athens)]. The meeting is organised by the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation and the Hellenic Costume Society, with support by ICOM Greece and Fougaro, as part of a series of festive events for the 40 years of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation.
