Theophilos, the gatekeeper of painting
In the context of the show "Theophilos", directed by Olia Lazariodu and hosted at FOUGARO ARTCENTER in March 2024, we invite you to a lecture on the painter’s life and work, on Sunday the 3rd of March at 17.00 in the LIBRARY.
The fustanella-wearing painter, whose leather belt instead of weapons carried brushes with which he decorated the walls of shops in Volos, Mt Pelion and Mytilene and was paid with food and board, constitutes a special chapter in the history of modern-Greek art.
In this tribute by art historian Venia Pastaka we shall take a tour of his almost mythical life and admire the colourful world of his painting. We shall discuss his inspired illustrations of subjects from folk tradition, history and mythology and the way they were conveyed, so as to gain an understanding of the distinctive work of this great artist.
