TSEKLENIS

The Fashion Years
October - December 2018

Fougaro in collaboration with the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation will host a big retrospective exhibition dedicated to the Greek designer Yannis Tseklenis, at FOUGARO THE GALLERY. The exhibition opens on 7 October 2018 and lasts until 25 November 2018. The main focus is on the oeuvre of the designer through his garment and textile collections starting from 1965 (launch of his first collection) until 1991 when he decided to step out of the fashion world.

The exhibition hosts a selection of Yannis Tseklenis’ creations, several fabric patterns, photographs, documents, films and rare audiovisual material from the designer’s archive. The exhibits are sourced from two donations the designer made to the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation in 1997 and 2009 respectively, enriching the collections of the Foundation significantly with 685 garments and 978 designs and patterns.

Yannis Tseklenis, a visionary in the field of fashion, left his mark for more than 20 years as an artist, a photographer, an interior designer, a businessman, an airplane and vehicles designer, a guru in textiles and fashion. His name became well known in the global creative scene: he influenced several artists while he himself was influenced by major artistic movements.

His creative course is closely associated with Greece’s crossing from the years of innocence of the 60’s to a rougher adulthood where the dream of an era of growing industrialization was dissipated, along with the hope that Greece could play a significant role on the international fashion scene.

Tseklenis’ work signifies the transcendence from textile boutiques and haute couture to the industrial production of prêt-à-porter clothing. He launched a powerful identity with his fabric designs in strong and trendy thematic collections. So his name is closely associated with the rise and fall of the Greek textile and fashion industry and also with the transition from natural to synthetic fibers.

During the exhibition there will be events and educational programs for children and adults as well as a special edition published in partnership with Kastaniotis publications.
